What is an Over 2.5 tip?
The Over/Under 2.5 goals market is one of the most popular for betting on football. See the top of this page for a brief explanation. It's where more than 2 goals (combined between the two teams) need to be scored in order to win a particular bet. You might also see this betting market displayed as "Over 2.5 goal line" - it means the same thing. An Under 2.5 goals market bet can be made on two teams scoring less than 3 goals in a game.
It's worth noting that both the Over 2.5 Goals and Under 2.5 Goals market odds are generally priced at around 2.0 (decimal odds) or 1/1. This makes sense when, considering that when you look at historical football results, the statistical analysis of either 2 or fewer goals versus 3 or more goals being scored across all matches is (on average) usually very close to 50/50 across all leagues and competitions. It's therefore little wonder some people refer to this market as a coin toss.
Some teams have a habit of scoring a lot of goals and others are known to be miserly. Our goal is to study the form to find the most likely outcomes for the Over and Under markets and string them together in winning football betting tips in the form of trebles and accumulators.
Why the odd name?
When first seeing the name of this betting market, it can cause confusion - There's no such thing as half a goal! But there is a reason behind this. If it was an Over 2 goals market, then the thinking is that people might think they had won if 2 goals had been scored. Similarly, Under 2.5 goals could be called the Under 3 goals market but some might think they'd won if 3 goals were scored.
Therefore, to avoid any doubt, they have been called the Over 2.5 and Under 2.5 goals markets.
